The prize citation for Dr. Mansfield’s Barry Prize reads:
Over a sixty-year academic career, Harvey Mansfield’s fearless exploration of the central
political ideas of the modern world, and their relationship to ancient ideas, has established him
as the Nation’s foremost scholar of modern political philosophy. His investigations of Tocqueville, Machiavelli, Burke, the American founders, and others have illuminated the
dynamics of executive power, party politics, rationalism, and the “spirited” virtues in modernity.
The Academy honors Dr. Mansfield’s distinguished contributions to humanity’s exploration of the
timeless questions of political order.
