The prize citation for Dr. Weiler’s Barry Prize reads:

Bridging jurisprudence, philosophy, political theory, religious studies, and more, Joseph Weiler has helped us explore the age-old question of what law is, and why law matters so much to human identity and community. His contributions on questions involving human rights, European integration, and international and comparative constitutional law have helped us do justice in ways that respect our individual and communal humanity. The Academy honors Dr. Weiler’s distinguished contributions to humanity’s pursuit of social orders that are humane, just, and free.

Joseph H. H. Weiler is university professor in the School of Law at New York University; and a senior fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University. He is both an academic specialist and renowned practitioner of international law, having served on the committee of jurists that co-drafted the European Parliament’s Declaration of Human Rights and Freedoms, as well as a member of the Groupe des Sages advising the Commission of the European Union on the 1996/97 Amsterdam Treaty. The recipient of sixteen honorary doctorates, he is the faculty director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice at New York University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
